Evan: "They are currently faster than 10 of the cars still in front of them. If things keep going like this, they are going to finish in the 90s... looks like they will end up finishing in the top of their class."

Unfortunately, the other JCW Coupe Endurance #147 stopped after 5 laps and will not be returning...... Wonder what the story is!! Let me know if you find any details!

Yesterday, on my way to the office I slipped on one of my favourite pieces of MINI clothing. The dark green, fine knit, cross-over "Story" vest is an unexpected piece of MINI apparel.

MINI clothes are easy to recognize: MINI logo/shape on a t-shirt and some extra bling/design with a dash of fun colours.

This vest is called "Story" because there are adjectives to describe MINI screened on the MINI shaped patch in the bottom corner.

Who knew you could show off your MINI passion while in a professional office setting?!?

PS: this vest was purchased last year at a MINI dealership's clearance sale and is unfortunately not a recent piece. In other words, if you want one, you will likely have to hunt for it!!

Spotted at my local Winners was this fabulous painting! The colours perfectly match my STELLAtoo and I was ever so tempted to snatch it up.

However, my condo has red accents, surprise! Not pink! I know you are shocked to hear this!! Even though I live alone, I wanted my condo to have a comforting environment for my visiting partner - hence a more gender-neutral colour like red!

But I digress...!

If I had a Countryman, I would surely have interior wall space where I could hang it! Who needs the lil back windows anyways, right? :P

Seriously though, I am having un-buyers remorse for letting this gem pass through my fingers!

Representing at the Toronto Auto Show!

I had a BLAST at the 2011 Toronto Auto Show this year! It was a fantastic experience to connect with MINI owners, would-be owners, and MINI lovers alike.

I was in my element. Talking about the features of driving a MINI: complete customization, driving a real driver's car with incredible go-kart handling, new friends through the MINI Club, etc. Showing off MINI's big brother The Countryman: The first MINI with 4 doors and ALL4 - MINI's unique all-wheel drive system.

LOVE IT!

Everyone asks: so you have a MINI? Yes indeed I do! Do you love your MINI? Well... where should I start...? :)

My goal was to obviously get as many would-be owners into a MINI as possible. That's just more people for me to wave to. More MINIacs to wave to connect with at the gas station. More people enjoying their commute as they are surrounded by the unique creature comforts and features of the MINI.

LOVE IT! Did I mention I love it? :D

The Paceman Concept is also at the show. I am hoping to do a quick video blog a la Beachcomber (http://www.minidurham.ca/25/mini%E2%80%99s-beachcomber-concept-surfs-with-fans-in-toronto/). Surprisingly, everyone has been so drawn to the Countryman that they are barely paying attention to the Paceman. Which is good in a way because the Countryman is available for sale now :)

Speaking of the Countryman: the response has been overwhelming. There are even more people out there than I thought who LOVE the MINI but can't fit their life in a 2 door hatch. Bring 4 doors and a slightly larger stance to the table and you have a success story! LOVE IT :)

I will be visiting the auto show again tomorrow with Adam since I didn't get a chance to check out the other exhibits. I've posted a few quick Blackberry photos of the MINI booth, but high-res images will come on Sunday ;)

The auto show in Toronto ends on Sunday (tomorrow), so get your butts motoring into the show to check it out before it's gone for another year! Also, I would appreciate a "hello" if you see me! (Shoutouts go to Neil/Brent/Candy/and the new SOMC members who I've met at the show so far!)

MINI Racing Game for Wii!

I am excited to announce that I got a Wii for Christmas!! It has been a ton of fun, with my Wii Fit games, dancing games, and of course the sports.

Something was missing though... A racing game with MINIs!

Lucky me, Adam found a used copy of GTI Club: Supermini Festa! He first picked it off the shelf because it said "GTI" and he was planning to comment that it wasn't fair that they had games about the VW GTI and not the MINI.

To our surprise, there was a R56 MINI front and center on the cover! You can also race a classic Mini as well as other European small cars.

I found a trailer of the game on Youtube here.

There are even multi-player games where you can play SOCcar with the MINIs! I have only played the game a couple times (since I just got it yesterday!) but I unlocked JCW challenge decals as well as the option between a Challenge spoiler, JCW carbon fibre spoiler, front lip, or fancy wheels. I chose the Challenge spoiler ;) The accessories look authentic too!

This will be a great game for club events! The sales guy at the game store I bought it from said it was discontinued, so I'm not sure if you will be able to track it down. Comment/email me if you'd like the barcode or any information that might help you find it in your local store!

The Dog Days are Over

This past summer, while leaving my job and traveling through the states with Adam, I kept the song "Dog Days are Over" by Florence and the Machine as one of the anthems of freedom, chasing your dreams, and just doing what you want in life.

I just received notice that I passed my final real estate exam and I am ready to register as an agent. The song was playing on the radio and I couldn't help but think how amazing this moment feels.

How it's all coming together!

Tonight's Gonna Be a Good Night

Every time I hear this song, I get tears in my eyes. My heart beats a little faster. My eyes light up. My thoughts wander.

Back to a night in the summer that represented so much for me.

I think back to how random it is that these fantastic MINI adventures come my way and I say yes every time. I go along for the ride.

MINI United 2007. What the eff was I thinking? Going to Europe for 2 months to hang out with strangers all by my self. That took some balls. Of course I had a smashing time. Of course it fueled the similar decisions in coming years.

MINI takes the States 2008. I planned to attend Boston and Chicago. Bought the tickets. Booked the hotels. In the last second, my co-pilot dropped out and I let reservations about traveling alone scare me from going... What a silly decision since the year previously I traveled around Europe to countries I'd never been to before - with strangers who I trusted just because they were MINI drivers (oh sometimes the best lessons are learned the hard way..!).

MINI United 2009. After telling Adam about how much fun I had in 2007 - at every second I could get and then some - plans were made and it was off to Silverstone. I surprised Adam with MU2009 tickets for his birthday. They were as much of a present for myself as they were for him. That was just the beginning. The friends we met, places we went, adventures we had..

It gives me shivers to think of the amazing opportunities I have been so blessed with.

Also..

To think of everything that could have gone wrong and instead... Everything went SO RIGHT.

After attending 2 major MINI events and gaining more excitement than the last time, I approach the most recent conquest: the United States of America.

MINI takes the States 2010. What a lead up... Well, I was working in what I thought was/would lead to my dream job at BMW Canada. I started 12 hours after my last exam at university. A bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, educated university graduate. Employed at her first choice of jobs while all my friends were struggling to find their place in the puzzle that is life. I had an opportunity courtesy of my lovely friends @ BMW/MINI Germany (who I met thru MU07/09) to attend the Countryman launch party with Michelle Branch and then jet off to Austria to Life Ball 2010. What a life! I had 24 hours to decide. Plans fell into place only days before and the flights to Europe were limited. I searched with travel agents to take anything I could get.. Just to get me to the continent of Europe, hoping that rental cars/Ryanair/trains/luck would get me the rest of the way. Of course I let the corporate world squish my plans like a bug when I was told I can't give a 12 hour notice of a trip needing time off - even IF it was business related (hey, it was for the German head office).

Sad and disappointed, I sulked into Indigo after work and picked up Eat, Pray, Love. The book came at a good time.

I left the "dream" job to go to MTTS2010 with Adam. A decision I never once regretted.

So when Adam and I danced with all the joy in our bodies filling the room. When we gave it our all to rock out to the MTTS2010 theme song of Black Eyed Peas, "I gotta feeling", we weren't just dancing.

We were celebrating.

All the gridlock and speed bumps we motored through on our journey to Denver. All the decisions we had to make to get us there. The daring and sometimes difficult maneuvers. The choices that seemed like mountains at the time that turned into the pages of a book and the subject of another blog entry about the crazy adventures and confessions from this MINIac.

So there you have it. Every time I hear that song, I am taken back to the personal journey that started the next chapter of my life in August 2010. I am taken back to a moment without regrets.

Do I need to hear that song again to make a decision to attend MINI United 2011? NO! I just need to know the when/where, silly MINI please let us know!

This post goes out to all the lifelong friends I made on my MINI journeys. The powerful connections due to a... small iconic car that I happened to purchase.

Ah, the world can be wonderful sometimes!

MINI Makes the Best Tattoos!

August 29-September 15 and still hangin' in there!

At MINI Canada's MINI Invasion event on August 29, I quickly applied a MINI tattoo. It was necessary to find a "tattoo below the waist" for the photo hunt. As luck would have it, a sheet of temporary tattoos, from MINI USA @ MINI Takes the States, was hanging around in the boot! A bottle of water and 30 seconds of press-and-hold resulted in a checkered flag adornment on my legs. (Yes, I sold real estate on my legs to MINI! :P)

Much to my surprise, the tattoo remained in perfect shape a week later despite hot weather, sweating, showering, and a rough exfoliation or two! Wow!

This surprises me because of memories of bad temporary tattoos as a child. And that was only 10 or less years ago...!

Technology has sure changed! I can't wait to try out the rest of the sheet! I'll post a pic of the whole sheet for those who didn't get the wicked swag bags from MTTS! :P

MINI Invasion (www.miniinvasion.ca) has begun! Adam and I are Team Lilcoopr -wearing our matching GoBadges shirts (www.gobadges.com).

We joined up with three other teams. So far, we have 2 check points completed: throwing 3 balls into a bucket attached to your team mate's helmet and buckling/unbuckling yourself into all seats in your MINI. The latter challenge is where the Clubdoor would come in quite handy!

This event is put on by MINI Canada - the GTA dealerships (www.gtamini.ca) with In Field Marketing doing a great job with the coordination! Our main sponsors are Virgin Mobile, Blackberry, and ION Magazine... Just to name a few!

We are on our way to the 3rd rally point for MINI Durham, then we head to other dealerships!

Tonight, we have a concert, BBQ, human foosball, and of course the MINI Design Challenge. Be sure to vote for MINI Durham's design: our Clubman towing an Airstream trailer - all decked out in the latest Sony technology! Sweeeeet!

Loving the New MINI Gear: MINI Rooftop Collection

I took a break from washing/waxing my JCW and my mum's 328xi (my sister has her MINI right now!) to read MotoringFile. What a pleasant surprise! The new MINI collection is out - the MINI Rooftop Collection.

I can do a quick review based on what I see so far, but an in-depth one will arrive when we get the collection at the dealership (probably in a few months - sad face!)

MINI seems to like updating the previous collection and re-releasing it in monotone colours. They did that with the "pop art" collection last year. A couple bags from last year's MINI 50 Collection are now released with the same print on a similar style, in a monochromatic colour-scheme.

Classic "retro" Mini print wallets with chunky zippers are new for the collection. Also, the luggage is updated wtih more choices - including impressive alloys as the wheels.

The part that really caught my eye are the black Union Jack duffle bags! Those leather (real leather or not?) UJs look SHARP! I can't wait to add this to my collection. Although I can already hear Adam now.... "not more bags!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I gotta motor - I have the West Enders MINI Club meet tonight at MINI Waterloo and I still have to buff the wax off my mum's BMW!

Home and Feeling Better

Just a quick update...

Adam and I are home in Canada as of last night and we are both feeling tons better! Instead of going to the hospital, which was miles out of the way, we just motored on through Nebraska and Iowa. Through 2 days STRAIGHT of rain.

I am sorting through photos, videos, and emails along with all of the trinkets and souveniers from this awesome trip!

Heaven and Hell

No, my post title is not referring to the end of MTTS!

Rather, how I am feeling right now. For those of you who have seen me the past couple of days, you knew I was fighting off a cold. Yesterday Adam and I drove back up to Red Rocks park and the surrounding roads and found a road called Bliss. That was not the real name, but we felt like we were in heaven. We also got so close to deer I could touch them (but apparently that's not a good idea since they are wild - so I didn't!).

Then my cold turned into something much much worse yesterday. And now we are motoring on our way to the hospital. Good thing I have travel insurance, but it's just awful knowing that our trip is cut short and interrupted.

The last few "live blogs" have been sparse as I konk out at 9pm, without uploading photos. More photos and stories of our adventures will come. I promise. Just not in the timely fashion I hoped!

I paused to look back on my MINI United 2009 and 2007 journeys for inspiration. Inspiration that complete randomness is part of the formula for masterpiece. Well it worked the last two times so why wouldn't it this time, right?

5 Things I Dislike About My 2009 JCW Clubman

After driving STELLAtoo for more than ½ a year and 10,000 KMs, I’ve come to really love but also dislike a few things about her. Nothing that I dislike is enough to make me downgrade the car in my mind: I still think it’s absolutely amazing! This list is more of a “sigh, STELLAtoo doesn’t do this...” kinda list. Not a “OMG don’t buy an R55/56/57 because it’s bad.” Nothing like that at all, OK? :)

Feel free to sound off in the comments whether you agree or disagree!

5 Things I Dislike about STELLAtoo (in no particular order):

1) No ram air.

I loved motoring around in STELLA (2006 Cooper S) without using any energy-consuming methods to blow air around the cabin. It blew just enough air around to keep things fresh even though the system was off. Don’t want any air circulating today? No problem, just take 2 seconds to close the vents/direct them somewhere else and keep motoring. Adam dislikes the ram air because he says it dries his contacts – I never had that problem!

In STELLAtoo, when the fan system is off, it’s OFF. Nothing. Absolutely nothingggg comes out of the vents. It’s as if they are closed. I find myself turning on the fan on speed 1 or 2 just to get things moving a bit. With the music off, you can faintly hear a motor of some sort kick in when the system is turned on. That gives me the impression I am using energy of some sort that’s taking away from my fuel economy and perhaps overall power?

Solution:

Turn the system on low or open the window a crack. Or get used to no air circulating. I guess the bottom line is that I enjoyed the air blowing without me needing to turn anything on!

2) Driver’s side seatbelt gets stuck.

Every morning as I peel out of my condo parking spot, I reach for the seat belt. And it’s stuck. I need to make a sharp turn around the aisles while reaching for the belt. So I stop, fiddle with it, buckle up, then keep going. This was never a problem for 3 years with STELLA. With STELLAtoo, the buckle part gets stuck between the seam/crack in the driver’s door. Wedged in there and stuck on the side of the seat. I don’t know if this happens on the passenger side. It probably does

If I wait until I get up 3 levels and have a brief pause while the garage door opens, then I hear the “ding ding” of STELLAtoo reminding me to buckle up. Yes, I could just buckle up before I start the car but I’m usually in a rush – excited to get out and motoring!

Solution:

Adjusting the seat in any which way didn’t help, and I noticed an small (not very noticeable unless you are looking for it) indent on the side of the seat from the seatbelt in not just my car but others at the dealership. I don’t think there’s anything that can be done other than getting used to it and adjusting my habits to reach for it when I’m not distracted by anything. Either that or one of those plastic-y mechanisms you see in some cars that pushes the seatbelt forward and kinda holds it? Do those things work? Not only are they visual-unappealing, but they have the potential to be more annoying. Will look into that and update you!

3) Melting (dented) hood scoop.

This topic has been done to death over the forums for owners with a R56/55/57. The heat put out by the turbo is so freakin insane! About an hour after motoring, I washed my car and when the water hit that area, it sizzled and created steam! I’ve looked into the M7 heat shield but have concerns about it containing the heat. Isn’t the point of the cooling fans to circulate heat OUT of the engine bay? Not TRAP it in a small, isolated, not-to-mention expensive part? It’s cheaper and easier to replace the hood scoop frequently if necessary rather than need maintenance in the engine bay due to excessive heat. MINI Durham is an authorized installer of M7 so I have easy access to the parts if I decide it is the right option for STELLAtoo.

To be honest, the melting is not THAT noticeable. I did notice it before I read about it on the forums, but I couldn’t decide whether it was a small, aerodynamic indent purposely placed there or if my eyes/lighting was playing tricks on me. If I don’t point it out, it’s barely noticeable to MINI owners who are not in the know and especially not noticeable to non MINI owners.

Solution: M7 Heat Shield (or isn’t there another company that makes one too? But doesn’t that one involve taking apart something to install it? – which made me kinda uneasy). Carbon fibre hood scoop (= $$$). Research an aftermarket hood scoop (maybe they are constructed to better withstand the heat?). Ask the dealership for a replacement, wait for it to melt again, and ask for another replacement – continue this process until I either get a) turned away or b) own my Coopster!

4) Double-venting sunroof.

“Wow, you have TWO sunroofs? That is sooooooooooooooooo cooooooool!” That’s the typical reaction I get from friends when they see me pull up with my sunroofs vented. For years of ownership with STELLA, I thought it would be cool if the rear moon roof could open as well. Be careful what you wish for! I saw it on the 2007 MINIs and thought it was a great addition to the car.

To be honest, I find it creates more noise when vented on the highway. There is also less air getting into the cabin. I think the airflow just gets kinda thrown around up there instead of moving smoothly over the roof. I am no physicist and I haven’t Googled the science of air flowing over an open sunroof (YET!) but I feel it’s probably not as aerodynamic due to the increased noise. Knowing how awesomely-cool the MINI designers are, I think they thought of this, researched it, and came to the conclusion that the noise wasn’t that bad/air still flows fine/the pros outweigh the cons.

Still, if I had a button to press that would keep the rear sunroof stationary, I would press it, glue it down, and make sure it doesn’t get un-pressed. Well, I would un-press it when motoring up to friends who are going to oooh and ahhh over it ;)

Solution:

Get Ian (who created the wicked-awesome auto-up for the R50/R53) to create a circuit to interrupt the movement of the rear sunroof. Climb up there and, out of frustration, mess with it myself so the rear roof stays put (not a good idea and not one that I will end up doing-or recommending!). Manage my expectations of looking cool and having quiet airflow while motoring at highway speeds. Yeah, I’ll choose the last option for now!

5) Little things I liked about STELLA.

The VERY audible burble and pop of my exhaust.

Radio controls that were more intuitive.

R53 body style.

Super-super charger power. Let me explain this one: Picture this... highway onramp. Accelerating speed. Merging into traffic. I pushed the RPMs higher on STELLA and increased my speed to more than I would be cruising at and created this super-super charger power that sustained the rest of the journey. I perfected this for more than 2 years and made notes of how to access it. Basically, my theory is that you set the “limit” for the cruise high from the beginning so STELLA gets all that power ready, and then you slow down to your cruising-with-the-flow-of-traffic speed and she maintains this extra boost of power. The car ultimately feels a LOT faster! I talked to my manager at MINI Durham and he said there is science behind it – so it’s not all in my head that I have extra power. On days when it wasn’t safe to sharply accelerate when on-ramping, I noticed she was still powerful, just not in the same way.

There’s nothing like this whatsoever with the turbo. I can press the sport button anytime I want and get an extra boost of power, but with the supercharger, I felt like I was unlocking a secret source of energy within the car. It’s like getting to a new level in a video game that unlocks new features!

Solution:

Drive an R53! Just kidding! It’s natural to pick out favourite parts of everything in life. What it comes down to is really personal choice to find the right car for you.

Conclusion:

I love the new car for so many other reasons that I can adjust and overlook some R53 quirks. It’s just nice to know that they impacted your life so much that you miss them once in a while. It’s also nice to know that the two cars are so different, but at the same time, so similar. Based on what you prefer, you can choose the MINI that fits you the best. There are die-hard R53 owners who say they wouldn’t dare drive anything else (that was me before!). There are also die-hard R55/56 owners who are loyal to the new features and couldn’t look back (I walk the line of happy with my R53 AND R55!).

I think it’s a testament to the vehicle that I drove it for 7 months, put on 10,000 KMs, and have only a little list of minor things. These five “dislikes” are really just out of habit of driving an R53 for 3.5 years and getting used to the car. Adjustment “dislikes”, if you will. They absolutely don’t impact my day-to-day motoring enough that I would choose a different car or recommend someone purchase something else. NICEEEEEEEEEEEEE – I like happy endings! :D

Last Saturday, I took a rest in a very sexy MINI Mayfair edition in the MINI Durham showroom. I love the toffee accents on the car, especially the lounge leather seats like STELLAtoo's, but obviously in toffee instead :)

Check out this really nice plaid MINI shirt on Amazon (it's the only place online I could find a direct link to it). I bought it at MINI Durham a couple Saturdays ago when I was working and I am in LOVE with it! Adam has the same but it's the men's version. The ladies' version has some really nice features such as elastic in the lower back for a nice fit and some matte grey square studs on the left shoulder. VERRRRY NICE :)

(You may also notice my hair cut...! It is ideal for hot, summer, windows-down-sunroof-open kinda motoring!

12 3/4 MINIs showed up to SOMC's first York region meet! It was a great turnout despite the scorching hot humidity with temperatures approaching 40*C even in the evening! We met up in a plaza parking lot near a Starbucks and Baskin Robbins (perfect for the hot weather).

STELLAtoo is on the far right!!! We had quite a few drive-by's - intrigued by the crowd of gorgeous MINIs.

This shot was taken by my blackberry, but I have more pictures to come that were taken on an actual camera.

I wore my JCW "hot stuff" t-shirt, MINI United 2007 bag, and obviously had my MINI Athens sunglasses!

STELLAtoo's Satellite Radio is Working Now!!

So I picked up STELLAtoo in January and was excited to try out my 1-year included subscription to Sirius satellite radio! I am a bit OCD about talking on the radio and prefer to have a huge library of music at my disposal at all times. FYI: I have over 80 GBs at last count of music on my personal hard drive - eek!

To my great disappointment, my satellite radio was not working when I took delivery of STELLAtoo! The head unit kept flashing "acquiring", even when I was in clear sight of the sky!! Very upsetting because this was one of the features I was most looking forward to!

I knew that yesterday was going to be a lucky day for my satellite radio because earlier at work while briefly driving an X5 Diesel with the iDrive system, the satellite radio said "Stella" when I got in the car:

BUT! Now I got it fixed!! I had a control module replaced under warranty and EVERYTHING IS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW!!!! I am so excited! She had to be reprogrammed with new software and all was good! BIG THANK-YOUs go to the Service Dept at MINI Durham, especially Kyle who stayed late to get the job done right! Yay!

Immediately I switched to channel 11 (my lucky number!) and tuned into BBC Radio 1! STELLAtoo was familiar with the british accents from her old Oxford days and she responded happily with a renewed burst of energy!

STELLAtoo and I will be happily motoring (and dancing) along thanks to my satellite radio! I am so converted!! Too bad it only works when the ignition is running because I would love to just chill out in SETLLAtoo - my own private lounge - and listen to whatever my - and STELLAtoo's - heart desires! AWESOME!

I had the pleasure of checking out the cars of Gum Ball 3000 2010 as they rolled through Toronto! The cars were parked in Yorkville - Toronto's high end shopping area - and the streets were blocked off all night for the event!

I will post more pictures in the coming days but enjoy this one as I met with drivers of the hydraulic Mercedes (that couldn't make it across the pond): "Glenda" and "Midge" from Fast Car magazine in the UK!
